Market at Olive
The Market at Olive is the largest retail development in St. Louis County in recent memory. It was a tremendous effort that brought together our entire community. Everyone from the residents to the City Council to the TIF board and the School District did their part to get this done. There is more than enough credit to go around.
Data shows that Costco in U. City is the most diverse and popular in the St. Louis Metro. Early estimates show that we can begin collecting sales tax sooner than expected meaning more money for our schools. It is our hope that this significant development will lead to additional growth along the Olive corridor such as the old Seafood City lot and continue to move to the east.
Cleaned Up River Des Peres
Flooding is a big issue that keeps many U. City families up at night especially during heavy rain. With help from MSD, we cleared large debris like dead trees, furniture, and other junk out of the River Des Peres. It was an important step to prevent future flooding and keep the river clean.
Breaking Ground on New Police Station and Municipal Court Building
University City’s beautiful, historic architecture is very special to us. The Council was able to save two historic buildings in the City Hall complex with zero tax increase to our residents. Our police officers will finally get the state of the art facility that they deserve.
Seeking Smart Development to Expand Our Tax Base
For decades, U. City has been a bedroom community. We underperformed compared to other parts of St. Louis County. I am proud of the steps we have taken as a community to make up for lost time and grow our tax base. In addition to the Market at Olive, we broke ground on the first ever hotel in University City history at the old Delmar Harvard Elementary School; we built 1,000 new apartments; opened Crescent Plumbing on Olive; and welcomed numerous small businesses to our neighborhood.
The more visitors we can bring to U. City, the more shoppers and diners we can bring to our businesses.
Supporting Our School District
Our school district has made huge strides with capital improvements and school performance in the last several years. A recent St. Louis Post Dispatch article named the School District of University City one of the most improved districts in the region, ranking it alongside Kirkwood. We owe it to our kids and the teachers to support the district as a community.
Rebuilding Your Trust in City Hall
When I first ran for mayor, I promised to keep U. City out of the local news and work to rebuild your confidence in City Hall. I think I made good on that promise. Maybe a little too good on the news one! I believe in listening to you and representing what you want to see in U. City.
